Raising children can be one of life’s most profound blessings, but it also can be very challenging, especially if you have a teenager. As children, they develop their own unique personalities, and sometime rebellion becomes just another part of the parenting process.

Sometimes the issue of appropriate discipline, praise and reward becomes an issue, and trying to find the right tools to use is all about knowing what is available to you. Many parents of teenagers become frustrated as their teenager may start to rebel and become distant. However, parents should realize there are various ways to connect with your teen, and open up the lines of communication.

First, find out what they like. Most teens today are obsessed with video games and the internet. You don’t have to be computer savvy to enjoy the hobbies they like. Having them teach you how to play one of their favorite games is a great way to bond with them, and get them to open up to you. For example, if they are into computer games, you can play fun games like online bingo, The Sims, Scrabble or educational games that may interest them.

Once you have bonded with them, and had a little bit of fun, remind them that you are always there for them if they want to talk. They will then feel more comfortable talking to you about something that may be bothering them, or may not rebel as they were in the past. You may not see significant results right away, but don’t give. Take small steps to get into your teen’s world, and find out what they’re thinking, and how you can help them.

Availability of Internet

There seems to be an abundance of availability of internet service these days. So many places that you go it seems that Internet is just available for free. It is important to recognize when you are connecting to the internet and whether you are legally connecting, is it a safe connecting and whether you are really being neighborly when you connect into your neighbors unsecured wireless internet.

Unless you are paying for the service or have permission to use the service technically speaking you are probably stealing it. It is possible that the service is free anyway, but it is probably important for you to check. Many business establishments provide their customers with a free wireless internet when you visit their business. Just because the business provides the service to it’s customers it is probably easy enough to connect from outside the building. No one will probably notice or care that you do this, but the reasonable thing to do is probably to ask and make sure.

A Standard That’s Neither Blue Nor a Tooth

Created by Ericsson in 1994, Bluetooth establishes a standard for networking using a complex system. It works with both radio waves and digital bits in order to send and receive information. The Recognizable Red, Yellow and White Connector

In this modern age, consumers use connectors every day to power their droves of devices. The types of connectors vary from product to product and person to person, but there is one that pervades nearly every American home: the RCA connector. Usually distinguished by its well-known red, yellow and white combination of wires, the RCA is the most extensively used equipment connector. But will it be that way forever?

The RCA connector was designed by RCA, or the Radio Corporation of America, in the 1940s to connect phonographs to sound amplifiers. Although at the time the connector only carried audio signals, the current manifestation of the cable carries stereo audio and composite video as well. These days, if you buy a television or any other kind of audio or video device, they will come with RCA jacks. These jacks appear as just three small holes on the back and front of the product and are known as “female” connectors.

To utilize an RCA connector, you simply match the color-coded “male” connector, which is the cable itself, into the color-coded jack. The yellow cable is for composite video, the red is for the left channel of stereo audio and the white is for the other, or left, channel. DVD players, video game consoles and camcorders all use the technology.

Despite the RCA connector’s prevalence, there are many downsides to the technology. The cables have a tendency to make a buzzing noise when plugged in, which can harm the equipment. Additionally, even though the cables and jacks are colored, it takes a moment to configure the correct order in which to connect, which can also lead to quality and performance issues. This issue of confusion would be mitigated if there were simply one “female” jack and “male” cable. Most importantly, RCA cables are an analog technology in an increasingly digital world. Eventually they will become outdated and devices will no longer be manufactured with these standard jacks.

SCART: A Standard From Another Land

When considering industry standards, it’s common to forget that not every country subscribes to those same standards. Although it’s true that certain guidelines can prevail regardless of where they originated, there are plenty of examples of foreign standards that most Americans have never encountered. One such standard, SCART, was developed in France in the 1970s for linking audio/visual devices. SCART, which stands for Syndicat des Constructeurs d’Appareils Radiorécepteurs et Téléviseurs, is actually referred to as Péritel in France.

SCART was created to connect equipment such as TVs and VCRs. The design of the connector includes 21 pins in two rows. It is characterized as bi-directional, but since RGB is not also bi-directional, this added advantage actually ends up being a disadvantage since most users don’t have devices that support the addition. SCART has also been criticized for being difficult for users to understand. The 21 pins are not always utilized by devices, which can create signal interruptions.

In general, the SCART technology is shaky. The convenience of its direct connection possibility is overshadowed by its inconsistencies. SCART has been updated throughout the years so that it can now support RGB video, digital, analog, composite and S-Video, but with so many incarnations throughout the years, it’s hard to remain a usable standard. The quality of output varies in SCART devices depending on the version, but it is generally accepted as one of the better options in Europe for connecting electronics.

Despite its downfalls, SCART is currently a very popular standard throughout much of Europe. It is relatively absent from the rest of the world, and most likely will never make headway elsewhere. With the rise of the HDMI standard, though, SCART is becoming less commonplace even in Europe. Globalization has created a smaller world market, allowing countries to share standards in ways unthinkable before the global culture became so connected.

The Future Standard of HDMI

High-Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI, is not as new as you might think. It’s only been the past few years that the market has seen an upswing in high-definition devices, but HDMI was actually designed back in 2002 and has been in production for nearly eight years. Since its inception, though, HDMI was thought to be where the standard was headed. Gone are the days of analog transmissions; the world is increasingly becoming an entirely digital environment.

The list of devices HDMI connects is astounding. Desktop computers, laptops, all newer video game consoles, digital televisions, DVD players, video cameras — any modern technology you can imagine — all are connected using HDMI. Despite its prevalence, HDMI is not yet the industry standard. Too many devices still exist that use old analog technologies.

But what makes HDMI so special? Its main advantage is picture quality. Because HDMI transfers video data that is not compressed, there’s no point in which the quality can deteriorate. Analog connections have to be converted to digital content when plugged into contemporary devices; HDMI is made specifically for those new devices. As of now, HDMI is semi-backward compatible with DVI-D devices, but the push is toward making HDMI the true standard and letting older ones expire.

Other than being great quality, HDMI has other advantages. HDMI works at an unparalleled speed and has 10.2Gbps of available bandwidth. The interface is also extremely user friendly. It’s what’s called an “intelligent” technology, which means there are multiple features like allow for automatic adjustments using a minimal amount of labor. One of its greatest advantages often overlooked is the fact that it was created with the future in mind. While HDMI can support current high resolutions, it is also designed to support resolutions that aren’t even used yet.

There’s no question HDMI will soon become the model for every new device. It’s time to throw away that old desktop monitor and get with the times.
